When I think about independent publishing, I primarily refer to the power and richness of independent Black presses and the certainty of the creativity and opportunity they created for us. This is a great path and tradition should you choose to walk the path you have a many guides.
It feels like the big publishers are getting increasingly risk averse, with a higher prioritization of writers who are already established. Independent publishers are the ones who take risks and take chances. They can be led by an ethos beyond profit margins.
Though Zed Books happened to be the focus of this post, I want to do more research around the history of Black independent publishers.
